Samichlaus events in Zurich: complete guide 2026

Where kids can meet Samichlaus in Zurich this year, how to book a home visit before the deadlines, and what to prepare.

The short version

The big events: The city parade is on Sunday, November 29, at 5 p.m. The Märlitram runs from November 20 (booking opens November 13 at 8 a.m.), and the Samichlaus boat sails on December 6.

Forest huts: Samichlaus’s hut on the Käferberg is open December 2 to 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s free, and there’s no booking.

Home visits: Book now. Home visits book up quickly so it’s better to do it in advance.

What kids do: They say a short verse or sing a song for Samichlaus, and in return they get a Säckli, a small bag of mandarins, nuts, and gingerbread.

Who is Samichlaus?

Samichlaus is the Swiss version of St. Nicholas. He visits on or around December 6, almost three weeks before the Christkind brings presents on Christmas Eve. He wears a long red robe and carries a staff. He never comes alone, his companion, Schmutzli, is his helper. Schmutzli is dressed in dark brown, he carries the sack of treats and a big book with notes on each child’s year. These range from the proud moments and the ones that could have gone better.

What kids do. Kids traditionally prepare a short poem, a song, or a piece of music for Samichlaus.. In return, they get a Säckli. The traditional contents are gingerbread, mandarins, nuts, chocolate, and Tirggel, the hard Zurich honey biscuits. At events, the Säckli is usually included. For a home visit, you buy the treats and assemble the sack yourself and Samichlaus hands them out.

What age is it best for? Kids from about three or four get the most out of it. For younger or shy kids, the parade or a forest hut is easier than a visit at home, because they can watch from a parent’s arms first.

What to wear. If you’re attending an event that is outside dress everyone warmly, with boots for the forest paths.

The big events

On the last Sunday evening in November, dozens of Samichläuse and Schmutzlis walk from Werdmühleplatz down the lit-up Bahnhofstrasse to Bürkliplatz, led by the Märlitram.

If your kids want one of the small gifts, stand along Bahnhofstrasse, where the Samichläuse hand them out as they walk past. The parade finishes at Bürkliplatz with a short ceremony and two brass bands, where Samichlaus officially starts his season.

Good to know: Kids aged 5 and up can walk in the parade as angels or elves. Registration closes on November 6. They then need to come to a costume fitting on November 18 and spend about three hours with the group on parade day.

Samichlaus’s forest huts

In late November and early December, Samichlaus and Schmutzli spend a few days in small huts in the woods, and families walk through the forest to visit them. You follow the signs along the forest path, wait your turn, and go inside, where Samichlaus talks with the kids for a few minutes. It’s a good first meeting for young or shy kids, because the visit is short and you stay with them the whole time.

Waldhüsli Käferberg

Samichlaus’s forest house, where kids see his living room and bedroom

DatesWed, Dec 2–Mon, Dec 7, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.SettingForest walk and hutEntryFree
Best forAges 3+

This is the classic Zurich Samichlaus visit. Samichlaus and Schmutzli “live” in a small house in the Käferberg forest for six days, chat with the kids who come by, and show them their living room and bedroom. There’s no booking. The path is signposted from Bucheggplatz (tram 11 or 15, bus 32 or 72) and from the Neue Waid restaurant.

It gets very busy, especially on the weekend, so a weekday afternoon is your best bet.

Good to know: For a quieter version, there’s a bookable evening celebration at the same hut: CHF 130 per family for about an hour, up to six people, with two filled Säckli and soup for everyone. Extra Säckli cost CHF 20.

Witiker Chlaushüüsli

A neighborhood forest hut, open for one afternoon

DatesSun, Nov 29, 3–5:30 p.m.SettingForest edge
Best forFamilies in Kreis 7

The Samichlaus group in Witikon opens its hut at the edge of the forest above Kienastenwiesweg for one Sunday afternoon. Take the bus to the last stop, Kienastenwiesweg, and follow the signs.

It’s the same afternoon as the city parade, which makes it a calmer alternative if your kids aren’t up for a crowd after dark.

Book a home visit

For many families, the real Samichlaus moment is a home visit. Samichlaus starts with a story, Schmutzli reads from the book, the kids say their verse or sing, and at the end they empty the sack together.

There are two ways to book in Zurich: through the St. Nikolausgesellschaft, which covers the whole city, or through a neighborhood group if your area has one.

How to book with the St. Nikolausgesellschaft

The St. Nikolausgesellschaft der Stadt Zürich is the society behind the parade and the Käferberg hut, and it sends Samichlaus and Schmutzli to homes across the city.

  1. Choose your visit. Family visits are for kids aged 4 and up. The price depends on how many kids there are:
    • up to 3 kids: 30 minutes, CHF 80
    • 4 to 6 kids: 45 minutes, CHF 100
    • 7 to 10 kids: 60 minutes, CHF 120
  2. Book early. You can book online at samichlaus-zuerich.ch/samichlaus-buchen, call the Samichlaus office at 044 454 70 00 (open October to December), or email zentrale@samichlaus-zuerich.ch. The office’s own advice is that the earlier you get in touch, the better. Visits are in the morning, at midday, or in the evening, depending on what’s still free.
  3. Fill in the Gwunderliste. This is the list Schmutzli reads from, and it comes with your booking confirmation. Fill it in by hand or online and print it. Write clearly, and give no more than three good points and two things to work on for each child.
  4. Leave everything out before the visit. Put the treats for the Säckli and the Gwunderliste in your mailbox, in the stairwell, or somewhere else the visitors can see easily but the kids won’t.
  5. Expect a small window. Depending on weather and traffic, Samichlaus can arrive up to 15 minutes early or late.

Neighborhood groups

Some neighborhoods have their own volunteer Samichlaus groups, usually attached to a parish. To find one near you, search by area in the directory at chlaus.ch. These two have published their 2026 dates:

Final thoughts

  • Book a home visit now: call the St. Nikolausgesellschaft at 044 454 70 00, or book through your neighborhood group.
  • Set a reminder for the Märlitram: booking opens November 13 at 8 a.m.
  • Practice a short verse or song with your kids during the week before.
  • For a home visit, have the treats ready: mandarins, nuts, gingerbread, chocolate, and Tirggel.
  • Write down a few good things and one or two to work on for each child.
  • Dress everyone for an hour or more outside after dark.
  • Go to the Käferberg on a weekday afternoon if you can. Weekends are much busier.
  • With a shy or very young child, let them watch from a distance first.
