Silvesterchlausen in Appenzell Ausserrhoden
What to expect
On December 31, groups of Silvesterchläuse walk from farm to farm and house to house, ringing heavy bells and singing slow, wordless yodels called Zäuerli. Kids see three kinds: the ‘schöne’ with elaborate headdresses, the masked ‘wüeschti’, and the Naturchläus covered in moss and branches. The house-to-house visits happen in the morning, and in the evening things move into the taverns.
Good to know
- Go in the morning for the house-to-house visits
- Reserve early if you want a table in a tavern in the evening
